As Blue Bird approaches its 100th anniversary in 2027, the company’s story is inseparably linked with Fort Valley, Peach County and the broader Middle Georgia region. More than a school bus manufacturer, Blue Bird has always been a community partner — investing in the people, places and programs that make this area thrive. The Blue Bird School Bus Foundation (the Foundation) was established to honor that legacy, carry forward the vision of the company’s founders, and create lasting impact for generations to come.
A Legacy Rooted in Community
Blue Bird was founded in 1927 by Albert Luce, Sr., whose innovative vision redefined student transportation. Alongside his sons George, Joseph and Buddy, the Luce family built a business that would become the only American-owned and operated school bus manufacturer in the U.S. Yet their influence extended far beyond the factory floor.
The Luces believed in the power of giving back. Whether through generous philanthropic donations or acts of quiet service, their commitment to community shaped the culture of Blue Bird. In 2008, Buddy Luce, Jr. donated $3 million to establish the Luce Heart Institute at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon. His obituary captured his spirit best, “His greatest joy was to make a difference in other people’s lives, and he gave cheerfully, sometimes anonymously and spontaneously.”
It is this same ethos of service and generosity that continues to guide the Foundation today.
A Foundation Revitalized
The Foundation entered an exciting new chapter in 2024 when it was reenergized under the leadership of Lauren Beaty, grants and community engagement manager. Beaty and the Foundation board worked diligently to redesign the grant application process, strengthen community connections, and set a renewed vision for impact.
“Over a year ago, the Foundation board began meeting monthly to redesign our application process and coordinate initiatives that contribute to Blue Bird’s community presence,” Beaty explained. “Our goal was to reintroduce Blue Bird as a willing and able partner to the Middle Georgia community.”
Through this revitalization, the Foundation is once again a strong vehicle for advancing education, health and safety, especially for school-aged children and families in need.
Extending Impact Nationwide
While the Middle Georgia community remains the Foundation’s home and heart, its reach now extends across the country through the Dealers Driving Communities Forward program. This initiative empowers Blue Bird’s dealer network to nominate local nonprofits for grants, ensuring that Blue Bird’s spirit of giving touches communities nationwide.
From coast to coast, Blue Bird dealers are strengthening neighborhoods by supporting initiatives that reflect local needs — whether that’s funding youth programs, enhancing public safety, or providing resources to disadvantaged families.
Spring 2025 Grant Awards
The Foundation’s first revitalized grant cycle was completed in spring 2025, marking an important milestone in its renewed journey. More than $50,000 was awarded to nonprofits in Middle Georgia, supporting programs that directly benefit children under the age of 19 and serve disadvantaged communities.
Grant recipients represented a wide range of organizations making meaningful contributions across the region:

- Fort Valley Lions Club
- Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, Inc.
- Macon Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities (RBI) Program by the Boys and Girls Club
- Peach Association for Intellectual Disabled, Inc., aka Kay Center
- The Salvation Army, A Georgia Corporation – Warner Robins Corps
- Safe Kids Central Georgia
- Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Inc.
- United in Pink, Inc.
Each grant-funded project represents a unique way to strengthen and uplift the lives of children and families. From car seat safety education to therapeutic programs for individuals with developmental disabilities to ensuring children have a safe bed to sleep in — these initiatives reflect the Foundation’s focus on practical, life-changing support.
One grant recipient, United in Pink, Inc., highlights the profound impact of the Foundation’s support. As Central Georgia’s breast cancer family resource provider, United in Pink offers emotional, social and financial assistance to individuals and their loved ones.
With the Foundation’s grant, United in Pink is able to host Kids in Pink, a four-day summer camp at no cost for children and grandchildren of breast cancer survivors.
“[The grant] enables us to provide this uplifting week at no cost to our families,” said Laura Paxton, co-founder and executive director. “Most importantly, these funds enhance these children’s ability to cope and thrive through this difficult season in their lives.”
This story illustrates the heart of the Foundation’s mission: empowering organizations that give children the tools to grow stronger, healthier and more resilient.
Looking Ahead
As Blue Bird nears its centennial, the company remains steadfast in its commitment to community. The Blue Bird School Bus Foundation will continue to serve as a bridge between the company and the people who have supported it for nearly a century.
