Each summer, students from universities across the country joined Blue Bird for an internship experience designed to do much more than build a resume. Through meaningful projects, executive mentorship, professional development, community engagement and hands-on collaboration, interns gained the experience needed to become tomorrow’s leaders.
At Blue Bird, summer internships aren’t about watching from the sidelines or getting coffee — they are about making a real impact.
Real Projects, Real Responsibility
From their very first day, the 2026 intern cohort became valuable members of their teams, contributing to projects that supported Blue Bird’s products, manufacturing operations and business strategy.
Across engineering, interns helped redesign components, optimize electrical harness routing, improve seat-planning software and support new technologies like 360-degree camera integration. Others contributed to Blue Bird’s growing electric vehicle portfolio through integrated chassis designs, improved manufacturing efficiency, and assisted efforts to deliver safer, more efficient and cost-effective vehicles.
On the manufacturing floor, interns documented production processes, created work instructions, designed tools to improve efficiency, and experienced firsthand how every part came together to build a school bus. Other interns digitized quality inspections, automated data reporting, collected vehicle diagnostics, and coordinated technician training programs for Blue Bird’s nationwide dealer network.
Meanwhile, interns in marketing, human resources, purchasing, data analytics and project management led recruiting initiatives, developed leadership communication tools, improved supplier reporting, built forecasting models and supported business initiatives across the organization.
No matter the department, every intern had the opportunity to contribute in meaningful ways and see the direct impact of their work. As one intern shared, “My intern work mirrors the full-timers’ — and it moves the needle.”
For another intern, one of the most memorable experiences wasn’t tied to a specific project, but to the manufacturing process. “Seeing how all the small pieces of the bus come together to create this one machine is just amazing to me.”
Learning from Leaders
Meaningful projects were only one part of the internship experience.
Early in the summer, interns were welcomed by Blue Bird’s leadership team during an executive networking event, which gave them direct access to company leaders. Rather than simply listening to presentations, interns had the opportunity to ask questions, discuss career paths, and gain valuable insight into what leadership looks like within a manufacturing organization.
Throughout the summer, leadership-led professional development sessions exposed interns to topics ranging from communication and collaboration to career development and business strategy. These sessions provided moments to learn directly from experienced leaders while building skills they will carry throughout their careers.
Collaboration Inside and Outside the Office
One of the biggest takeaways interns shared was how collaborative the Blue Bird culture is.
By working alongside employees in engineering, manufacturing, marketing, finance, purchasing, human resources and other departments, interns gained a broader understanding of how every team contributes to deliver safe, reliable transportation solutions.
The collaboration didn’t stop when the workday ended. Throughout the summer, interns participated in team-building activities like Community Day and an evening at a Macon Bacon baseball game, cultivating friendships and professional relationships that will extend well beyond their internships.
Blue Bird also encouraged interns to give back to the community they called home for the summer. This year, interns volunteered with the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank and Backpack Buddies Ministry to provide food to local children and families experiencing food insecurity. Serving alongside one another reinforced an important lesson — leadership isn’t just about delivering results; it’s also about making a positive impact on others.
Advice From Those Who’ve Experienced It
When asked what advice they would give future interns, several common themes emerged.
1. Stay curious. “Be curious. Internships are what you make them, and taking that extra step can go a long way in terms of your overall learning and connection experience.”
2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. “Come prepared not to know what you’re doing. A lot of the work involves learning as you go and proactively seeking information about topics you’re not familiar with.”
3. Take the opportunity to build relationships. “Try not to be nervous to talk to people. Everyone is so kind and wants to learn who you are as a person. Put yourself out there.”
Another intern offered a reminder that perfectly captured the purpose of the program, “Internships are about developing yourself as much as they are contributing to the company.”

For many students, the internship marked the beginning of something much bigger. Blue Bird views its internship program as an important part of its long-term talent pipeline, creating opportunities for high-performing students to continue through the company’s Future Leadership Development Program, a full-time rotational program available after graduation.
