Since its launch in 2018, Blue Bird Academy has been dedicated to one mission: equipping our dealer and customer technicians with the knowledge, skills and career pathways they need to excel in the evolving world of student transportation. What began with a single sales certification has transformed into a robust, multilayered training system that now supports hundreds of learners across the Blue Bird network.

Today, Blue Bird Academy is entering its next significant phase — one that restructures certification levels, strengthens foundational learning, deepens specialty expertise and builds clearer pathways for career growth. These updates not only reflect how far the Academy has come, but also signal where Blue Bird is headed as we continue to innovate across fuel types and next-generation technologies.
In short: the certifications are evolving so our technicians can, too.
A Training Program Built for Growth

When Blue Bird Academy was founded, the goal was simple — create structured pathways for dealership personnel to build competencies, confidence and long-term careers in the school bus industry. Over the past eight years, that mission has expanded significantly.
Nathan Bateman, senior manager of Blue Bird Academy Training and Technical Publications, who recently joined Brad Beauchamp on a recent episode of the Bird’s Eye View podcast, described the Academy as “a systematic route for the development of dealer technician personnel, as well as customers.” That means creating a mapped-out plan of growth — one that aligns course materials, technical documentation, online learning and hands-on experience. It also means working closely with Blue Bird’s field service team to ensure that training reflects real-world needs.
The Academy’s goals are dual-purposed: help dealers more effectively sell, support and service Blue Bird buses; and ensure technicians can confidently repair and maintain buses once they’re in operation.
Today, the training demand remains steady, with hundreds of technicians participating in Blue Bird Academy training each year. With this restructuring, training and certification opportunities will become even clearer and more accessible.
An Updated Certification Structure: Associate, Advanced and Master Levels
To support the growing diversity of Blue Bird products, and the growing expectations placed on skilled technicians, the Academy has refined the strategy for its three-tiered training program:
Associate Level: The Foundation

The Associate Level Technician Certification is the entry point for both dealers and customers. It provides a broad understanding of school bus systems, Blue Bird specific processes and essential technical concepts.
Key features include:
- 100% online, self-paced coursework
- Two required exams
- Proctored exam sessions to uphold certification standards
- Renewal every two years to keep knowledge current
This level is ideal for new hires, technicians transitioning into the bus industry, or teams who need foundational grounding before specializing.
What’s new: Associate-level content has been streamlined and rebuilt to better support learners who are preparing to move into specialty areas. Some topics previously covered in the Associate Level now appear in the Advanced Level — an intentional shift designed to establish stronger electrical competencies before students engage with Blue Bird specific systems.
Advanced Level: Deepening Skills Through Specialties

The Advanced level introduces specialized areas of study that align with the technologies and systems technicians encounter in the field. These include:
- Low Voltage Electrical
- Electric Vehicle (EV)
- Ford Powertrain (fuel systems, transmission, engine performance and repair)
Each specialty includes several courses, with certain topics taught in-person by Blue Bird subject matter experts for deeper learning. Technicians who complete a specialty earn “Advanced” certification in that area.
Technicians must complete the Low Voltage Electrical specialty content before pursuing other specialties. This promotes faster, more efficient diagnostic knowledge transfer to other specialty areas of study — leading to better troubleshooting, safer repairs and more confident diagnostics.
Master Level: Technician Concentrations

The Master Level represents the highest tier and is achieved by completing combinations of specialties. This structure mirrors how technicians naturally grow in their careers:
- Ford Powertrain Master Technician: Electrical + Ford specialties
- Electric Bus Master Technician: Electrical + EV specialties
As the training program continues to evolve, additional training pathways for specialties such as Chassis and Body Concentrations may be introduced. This design reflects Blue Bird’s long-term goal: a career pathway that allows technicians to build the technical expertise they want — whether that’s EV systems, chassis, powertrains, body repair or a mix of all.
Keeping Technicians Connected: Quarterly Webinars

One of the most popular benefits available only for certified Blue Bird dealer technicians is exclusive access to quarterly webinars. The content for these sessions is informed directly by Blue Bird’s field service team, ensuring the topics reflect common questions, real-time issues and emerging technologies.
Blue Bird actively gathers input from certified dealer technicians to shape webinar content, making these sessions an ongoing two-way conversation between the Academy and the field. As new products, features or powertrain updates launch, training is built to accompany it — ensuring technicians don’t feel left behind.
Upon completion of the Associate Level Certification, newly certified dealer technicians will immediately have access to a wealth of knowledge — a growing webinar library with more than 15 hours of content. Attendees build their Blue Bird expertise with each webinar they attend.
In-Person Training: Hands-On Learning That Scales

In addition to Certification programs, Blue Bird Academy also hosts in-person trainings — typically during the summer when technicians have more availability. These events bring in subject-matter experts, engineers and leaders who offer deep product knowledge and hands-on technical experience.
A Training Program That Evolves with Blue Bird

Just as Blue Bird continues to innovate — from electric buses to advanced safety systems — the Academy continues to align its curriculum with the company’s strategic direction. The updated certification model ensures that, no matter how school bus technology evolves, technicians will have access to the training they need to stay ahead and be successful.
Ultimately, the goal is simple. When someone joins a Blue Bird dealer or a customer has a new technician, they should see a clear career path that allows them to grow, specialize and advance. With the refined certification strategy, expanded specialties and enhanced learning pathways, Blue Bird Academy is building the workforce that will support the next generation of Blue Bird buses.
