Blue Bird and IMMI Present Industry-First Driver Airbags

Blue Bird introduces the first driver airbags in school buses, advancing school bus safety and driver protection through its partnership with IMMI.

For nearly a century, Blue Bird has built its reputation on one unwavering commitment: the safety of the students, drivers and communities it serves. As of October 2025, that legacy of leadership continues with the introduction of driver airbags as standard equipment on all Blue Bird Vision school buses.

For the first time in student transportation history, new Blue Bird buses will feature 4Front, a steering wheel-deployed airbag developed in partnership with IMMI, the trusted global leader in school bus seating and advanced safety systems. The first buses with this ground-breaking feature have now rolled off the production line — marking another milestone in Blue Bird’s history of innovation.

Closing a Surprising Safety Gap

Most people are surprised to learn that school buses have never been required to include driver airbags or seat belts. In passenger vehicles, these features have been standard for decades. Yet every weekday, more than 175,000 school bus drivers transport 25 million children, covering nearly 6 billion miles per year. Or, the distance to the moon and back over 12,500 times.

Blue Bird is changing that.

During a conversation between Blue Bird Product Segment Leader, Brad Beauchamp, and IMMI executives, John Barrington and Norm Gould, on the Bird’s Eye View podcast, it was mentioned that during an incident or accident on a school bus, the driver is the person responsible for helping children safely off the bus. One of the main things needed after an accident is an adult who’s in good shape to help kids evacuate.

By introducing driver airbags as standard equipment, Blue Bird is helping ensure that drivers are better protected and better able to respond when it matters most.

A Partnership Built on Safety and Growth

IMMI and Blue Bird Celebrate Opening of New Manufacturing Plant in Macon, Georgia

The introduction of the 4Front driver airbag is the latest achievement in Blue Bird’s long-standing collaboration with IMMI, which recently celebrated the grand opening of its new manufacturing facility in Macon, Georgia.

The new plant will support Blue Bird’s safety initiatives by manufacturing seating and safety systems for select Blue Bird models equipped with these industry-first features, including three-point seat belts and steering wheel-deployed airbags.

Protecting Those Who Protect Our Kids

Blue Bird Vision models rolling off the production line now feature IMMI’s 4Front airbag system as standard equipment. The airbag deploys automatically within milliseconds in the event of a crash, just like an automobile, and requires no additional action or maintenance from drivers or technicians.

The system adds a vital layer of protection for the driver while maintaining Blue Bird’s reputation for reliability and ease of operation. Geography or road conditions do not affect the system’s performance — it’s equally effective in every operating environment.

“Every day, millions of children travel on our buses to school and back home. They are the most precious cargo in the world,” said John Wyskiel, president and CEO of Blue Bird Corporation. “For nearly 100 years, Blue Bird has led the way in school bus safety. We partnered with IMMI to bring industry-first, standard student and driver safety systems to school districts in North America. We are thrilled that our joint commitment to safety drives investments, manufacturing expansion, and job growth in our home state and beyond.”

A Strong Message for Driver Recruitment and Retention

Adding driver airbags sends a powerful message to school bus drivers: your safety matters. For school districts and fleet operators, it also strengthens driver recruitment and retention efforts.

Drivers are passionate professionals who take pride in their role as guardians of the nation’s children. Providing them with the latest safety innovations demonstrates respect and care for their well-being. It also builds confidence behind the wheel, knowing their bus is equipped with advanced protection.

Safety That Works Seamlessly

The 4Front airbag system integrates directly into the steering wheel and operates automatically. No special configuration or maintenance is required. In typical situations, the system operates effectively, contributing to reduced injury risk and helping the driver stay alert and capable in an emergency.

The payoff is straightforward:

  • Safer drivers, able to respond more effectively in the event of an accident.
  • Faster, calmer evacuations for students.
  • Enhanced peace of mind for everyone on board.

Blue Bird believes that thoughtful safety enhancements, however small, can contribute to better outcomes in an emergency.

Continuing a Legacy of Safety Leadership

With driver airbags now being installed on all Blue Bird Vision Type C models, Blue Bird and IMMI are raising the bar once again for the entire student transportation industry.

The two companies will continue working with professional organizations, states and OEM partners to make safety innovations standard across the industry — because protecting students begins with protecting the people who drive them.
